The University of Freiburg
The “Green City” Freiburg in southwest Germany is known worldwide for its historic old town, the Black Forest mountains, its recreational value, its high environmental standards and of course for the Albert-Ludwigs-University. Founded in 1457, the university is located in the middle of the city. It has received many awards as one of the best German universities in nationwide competitions for its excellent research and teaching. The university offers its approximately 25,000 students a creative and inspiring environment in which it is a pleasure to learn, research and live.
In close cooperation with its European partners, the University of Freiburg strives for excellence in research, innovation, teaching, and with regard to the social impact of science and research. We aim to realize the European idea of cooperation for lasting peace and prosperity on the basis of innovative, values-based research.

In 1997, the University of Freiburg was the first university in Germany to begin establishing contact with former students. From Alumni Freiburg they receive all important information about their university. Today, around 90,000 alumnae and alumni worldwide are in contact with their university through the Alumni Club network. In 17 national and international clubs the alumni invite to events. Alumni meetings in Freiburg offer the opportunity to see the university and former friends of the university again. Through the Alumni Freiburg e.V. support association, alumni can get involved with their university after their studies.
At 17 scientific centers, more than 100 scientific facilities of the faculties and in numerous collaborative research centers, researchers from different disciplines are dedicated to one topic. From medieval studies or research into renewable energies to materials science and the life sciences: scientists benefit from the shared infrastructure. In addition, they cooperate in their projects with national and international non-university partners.
As a fully comprehensive university offering a wide range of disciplines, the University of Freiburg regards the task of pooling research interests across the boundaries of several disciplines to forge new links in research and teaching to be part of its institutional identity. Research at the University of Freiburg is also strengthened by regional partnerships with non-university research institutions such as Max Planck Institutes and Fraunhofer Institutes, which participate actively in several collaborative projects.
As one of the comprehensive universities with the most third-party funding in Germany, the University of Freiburg offers a multitude of research programs:
State-of-the-art technologies and their further development are of fundamental significance for top-level research. The University of Freiburg has thus given high priority to a continuous development of research infrastructures in the past years. In order to guarantee professional and efficient operations, we have established so-called technology platforms and core facilities.
Scientists in the qualification phase are of outstanding importance for every university. They provide a significant part of the scientific performance and are important for the own innovation and renewal ability. The University of Freiburg therefore strives to provide the best possible support for doctoral and post-doctoral researchers on their career path and to offer them an optimal research and teaching environment.
Living in Freiburg
The Black Forest metropole Freiburg is home to one of the oldest universities in Germany. The many hours of sunshine and the magnificent nature make it a perfect city for all summer worshippers and nature lovers. In addition, Freiburg enchants with the ancient charm of the city center.
Whether registering patents, cooperating with commercial partners from industry, holding lecture series and other formats of science communication, advising political institutions or offering continuing education courses that reflect the broad spectrum of subjects offered by a comprehensive university, the University of Freiburg uses its expertise for the benefit of society and strengthens the exchange between science, business, culture and politics through its transfer of ideas, knowledge and technology.
The University of Freiburg is one of the most innovative universities at the regional, national, and now also the international level.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs launched the competition “EXIST Entrepreneurial Culture – the Entrepreneurial University” to encourage more entrepreneurial spirit at German universities. The University of Freiburg was successful in the competition with its strategic concept “Windows for Entrepreneurship” and is among the 22 universities in Germany now receiving funding from the program.
